Only 70 Km. West of Havana, and amidst Sierra del Rosario, one of Cuba’s Reserves of the Biosphere, visitors to Artemisa province will find Soroa: undoubtedly Nature´s Paradise. Sierra del Rosario is an exceptional setting for such a spot, covering an area of 26,686 hectares.
This Reserve of the Biosphere shows a complex geological structure, with a great diversity of rocks that produce different and special soils, which in part, determine flora endemism in its landscape that can be found in Soroa. Soroa hosts the largest orchid nursery in the Island with over 700 species. Bird-watchers will discover many of Cuba’s endemic species such as tocororos (Priotelus temnurus), cartacubas (Todus multicolour) and the tomeguín del pinar (Tiarias canora). Other attractions of Soroa, are horse riding and diverse modalities of trekking with a specialized Guide’s to sites as the valley of Bayate River for example, where numerous ruins of French coffee plantations of the XIX Century still remain.
